Museum

View a two-story, 20,000-gallon coral reef tank that features dozens of tropical reef fish as well as a wide variety of colorful corals. Children will especially love seeing the common clownfish (often called Nemo) and the blue tang (otherwise known as Dory). Academy biologists are using this enormous tank to test ideas for the even larger 225,000-gallon coral reef tank that will be a part of the New Academy when it opens in Golden Gate Park in 2008.

Helpful Information: Wetsuit-clad divers enter the tank every Monday and Wednesday afternoon at 2:00pm to care for the corals and clean the tank walls. What's Wrong With This Car?
Museum

Listen with the ears of an auto mechanic to interpret what problems exist in this new interactive exhibit, which includes the front half of a new car, encourages visitors to sharpen their listening skills by having them focus on sound as a source of information about an underlying problem, just as a trained mechanic does. With practice, listeners can distinguish the auditory nuances that distinguish a sticking valve from a bad set of brakes. And they also hone another kind of skill: translating imitations of sounds, made by customers' lips and tongues, into the metallic clicks and whirrs of pistons, calipers, and cams.

Listen: Making Sense of Sound
Museum

Dive into the sonic soup, Listen: Making Sense of Sound. A new 5000-square-foot exhibition that's been three years in the making and features over fifty-five interactive exhibits, forty of them brand new. In the exhibition, listen as a musician does for the patterns that form the structural framework of musical composition. Or sort out the aural clues that evoke a sense of place, automatic doors and cash registers versus teaspoons clinking against cups and espresso machines. Explore the physiological processes of hearing, human speech and communication, and take a host of sonic journeys. Combining exhibits, activities, demonstrations, specially commissioned artist-created listening environments, as well as public programs, this exhibition invites you to experience, as never before, the nature of sound, the ways in which humans perceive sound, and, most importantly, how you listen. There is even listening at home via the web at www.exploratorium.edu/listen.

Interactive digital artworks using game technology three internationally-known artists embrace the unreality of virtual spaces.

Our world is edging more and more towards digital environments. What are the societal and cultural implications? Does it change the way we think? The way we feel? Virtual Unreality, a new interactive exhibition in the Exploratorium's Seeing Gallery, brings together three digital artworks by internationally-known artists that use game technology to explore the unreality of virtual landscapes. The works are Life Spaces II by Christa Sommerer and Laurent Mignonneau, Scalable Cities by Sheldon Brown, and Oceans (2000-2007) by Dan Torop.
