Alegrias Food From Spain
Authentic Spanish fare, from an array of nearly 30 different tapas to huge platters of saffron-scented paella, may seem out of place in a Holiday Inn, but amazingly, here they are, prepared by Barcelona-trained chef Roberto Caceres, who not only turns out succulent appetizers and main courses but also serves as pastry chef. Tapas options range from shrimp sautéed in garlic sauce and marinated deep-fried squid to cured Spanish ham with marinated olives and pork loin skewered with red peppers, onions and mushrooms. There are four prepared-to-order paellas, from the classic seafood, chicken, sausage and rice dish to a vegetarian version with a host of vegetables from artichokes and mushrooms to zucchini. The Spanish community has welcomed this warm and friendly place, which offers flamenco entertainment on Friday and Saturday evenings as have those who were not born to the cuisine, but who appreciate its vibrant flavors. Alegrias means happiness, and when the staccato heels of the dancers are resounding and the aromas of chorizo, garlic and paprika waft through the rooms decorated with colorful murals of Spanish scenes, the name lives up to its meaning.

Entertainment: While many new restaurants offer food on small plates, Spanish restaurants like Alegrias have been doing it for years. But the Marina District restaurant doesn't have much in common with more cutting-edge small-plates adorning the walls, flamenco shawls thrown over wooden screens and floral fabric coverings on the dining chairs.
